Customer Reviews:
Good for some, not for others (moi) (2008-03-30)

Not being one for excessive exercise, sometimes even moderate (shame on me), I decided to give this product to my adult workout-manic son. I did however, sample a taste of it before passing it on to him two hours prior to a workout. My reaction was first a sweet and tart flavor, followed by an aftertaste. Maybe the aftertaste was chemical or loaded with sugar; in any case, it was too much for me to consider drinking an entire bottle- if I were to decide to exercise strenuously.

My son’s reaction was more favorable, but he is used to loading up on carbs before a workout. Reading the label (320 calories, 0 grams of fat, 350 mg of Sodium, 160 mg of Potassium and 79 grams of carbohydrates), he wasn’t sure he wanted to pour all this in his body. He tolerated the taste but said he would have to experience an extraordinary workout before loading up on all these chemicals on a regular basis.

A few hours later, he called to say the workout went all right, some energy boost, but he wasn’t committed to using this product with any consistency. He was willing to try it again, to compare the two workouts, but his inclination was to stick with regular Gatorade products and avoid the extra amount of carbs and sugar in this drink. Taste like regular gatorade (2008-03-23)
I was a little concerned that this new product from Gatorade would taste a lot different than the original that I enjoy. As a runner I have drank plenty of gatorade in my lifetime, so I am happy to report that this product tastes just like the original despite the different blend of the ingredients. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys regular Gatorade and is looking for a high card drink.Tasted Good (2008-03-16)
I tried the wild berry in Gatorade’s performance series and have to say I really liked the taste. It was much better than the normal Gatorade. I little more sweet and a tad less sour.very good–but best suited for the athletes amongst us (2008-03-13)
Gatorade performance series carbohydrate energy formula is not my favorite tasting beverage; but for the athletes amongst us it can sure make excellent sense to drink this stuff! I am no athlete; I only drink this sporadically. This drink is best suited for people who train intensively and people who compete in sporting competitions. It’s essentially a “high octane” version of regular Gatorade. It does have a somewhat pleasant berry, fruity taste to it that is enhanced by huge amounts of sugar. If the taste isn’t too great, try to refrigerate this before drinking it. Leave any leftover Gatorade refrigerated for best taste and nutritional value.

Gatorade comes in a firm plastic bottle with a cap that screws on and off for easy drinking. It contains 79 grams of carbs that you will probably lose if you’re really exercising a lot. In addition, this type of Gatorade has sodium (ouch) BUT it will rehydrate you fast after you work out. It may also be helpful to drink Gatorade if you have diarrhea; ask your doctor about this. It’s also worth noting that this type of Gatorade contains 25% of the recommended daily intake of niacin, B6, and pantothenic acid

In addition, Gatorade can give you an energy boost without making you lose sleep; this is because Gatorade has sugar but no caffeine.

Overall, I highly recommend Gatorade as more than just a snack drink. Gatorade helps you to rehydrate after you sweat a lot during a work out or some type of sporting competition; and it gives you an energy boost as well while replenishing any carbohydrates you may have lost doing exercise. It may also be beneficial when you’re on chemotherapy (as I am) to balance out your body’s system. I believe that this type of Gatorade also contains electrolytes that can be beneficial to your system.

If you have any questions about Gatorade ask your doctor before drinking this beverage.

Five stars for function and flavor from an endurance cyclist. (2008-03-12)
I’m a cyclist and I’ve been a cross country runner; I ride long distances year round; and I’ve tried a multitude of mixes, juices, gels, and sports bars in my decades of riding. Most of them are horrible: either disgusting to eat or full of stuff that’s not necessary to the task. Regular Gatorade has been my weapon of choice for the last few years not only because it works well to keep me going with the proper amount of salts/electrolytes, but because it’s palatable or even delicious over the hours I spend on the saddle on, say, a 100 mile ride–which is something I can’t say I’ve found in other sports drinks or mixes which perform far better, such as Accelerade, but are intolerable to drink for the duration. Gatorade Performance is much the same, but adds carbohydrates which are vital to any endurance effort, whether it be sports or construction work.

Drinking this stuff straight will not hydrate you; only water does that. It’s important to realize that the balance in these drinks when they come as a liquid is just enough of a ratio between electrolytes and water to not act as a diretic–translation: something that dehydrates you. If you use a mix, you have to make sure to follow the directions or err on the side of more water.

Sports drinks will not be less effective if you dilute them in water or drink water in addition to your sports drink. Talking cyclists: some prefer to have one water bottle full of a sports drink such as Gatorade Performance Series Carbohydrate Energy Formula and have water in their other bottles and/or Camelbak. My preferred method is to use a 50/50 mix of Gatorade and water in my Camelbak–and a good strong coffee in one of my water bottles mostly because I really love coffee, but it the caffeine also helps in oxygen transfer to the muscles.

Too high a concentration of Gatorade will not hydrate you enough and could result in cramps, a headache, and fatigue–exactly like and in no way disimilar to a hangover. Water alone will serve you well, and so will Gatorade/Water, but if you add Gatorade Performance you should notice that you’re able to go stonger and longer than you’ve ever done before. It makes a hell of a lot of difference.

Sure, you could go with a 50/50 mix of water and orange juice–or any fruit juice–and add some salt. That would be as good or better, but the good folks of Gatorade have already formulated just the thing in a liquid that wont spoil and taste disgusting, or separate into an intense fruit concentrate and dingy water at the top that needs to be shaken before each sip. Gatorade is great stuff, Gatorade Performance is even better, and it comes in tasty flavors without adding sugar that would hinder your endurance.

You will more carbs over the long haul than are in this drink–if you’re exercising for more than an hour–for which I suggest Clif Bars. The directions on the label for Gatorade Performance are really meant for people who are going to train for about an hour–not four to six hours or more.

THE TEST: I tried this out on a 30 mile bike ride–mountain bike–on a cold day in early March. The wind was 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph if I remember correctly. The ride lasted about two and a half hours, medium pace.

For a winter ride I normally use water only, and take along a couple of Clif Bars to keep my engine fueled but this time didn’t touch the Clif Bars to make sure the Gatorade Performance was doing its job. I put one bottle of Gatorade Performance in about one liter of water in my Camelbak.

The amount of carbs in the Gatorade were just enough to keep me fueled and therefore allow my body to generate a good, comfortable amount of heat. If it had been a longer ride, I would want/need to consume more calories, but probably wouldn’t bonk–cyclist slang for running out of gas–if I had nothing but the Gatorade. It was certainly better than water alone, and far better than doing something stupid like consuming no water or little to no carbs on a ride.

BOTTOM LINE: Gatorade Performance is better than regular Gatorade for endurance athletes, and tastes just as good.
